Tirana Airport to Durrës: Every Transfer Option Compared

Tirana International Airport (TIA, also called Rinas) sits about 35 km from Durrës — roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car on the SH2/SH4. There's no direct public transport link between the airport and Durrës, which is the detail that catches a lot of first-time visitors off guard. Here's how the actual options compare.

Rental Car with Meet & Greet

You land, clear arrivals, and someone is waiting with your name on a sign and the keys in hand — no shuttle to an off-site lot, no counter queue. This is the only option that gets you door-to-door on your own schedule, and it's the one that makes sense if you're planning to explore beyond Durrës itself (Krujë, Berat, the coast). Taxi

Taxis are available right outside arrivals. It's the fastest way to get moving if you haven't pre-booked anything, but agree the fare before you get in — metered taxis exist but aren't universal at the airport rank, and a pre-negotiated price avoids any ambiguity. A taxi gets you to your hotel directly, same as a rental car, but you're back to arranging transport for anything you want to do afterward.

Private Transfer (Pre-Booked)

Pre-booked private transfers — arranged through your hotel or a transfer company — cost more than a rank taxi but remove the fare-negotiation step and guarantee someone is there when you land, delays included. This is the middle ground between "cheapest" and "most flexible": more predictable than a taxi, but you're still without a car once you arrive.

Public Bus + Furgon (Budget Option)

The budget route, and the one that takes the most patience: an airport shuttle bus runs between TIA and Tirana's city centre (Skanderbeg Square), and from there you'd catch a furgon (shared minibus) to Durrës — these run frequently along the SH2 during the day but don't operate on a fixed timetable and mostly stop by early evening. This works if you're not in a hurry and traveling light, but it's realistically a 2+ hour door-to-door journey once you count waiting time, and it doesn't run late at night.

Which One Actually Makes Sense?

If your trip is Durrës and a couple of day trips, a rental car picked up at the airport is genuinely the least hassle of the four — you're not re-arranging transport for Krujë or Berat later, and there's no waiting around for a furgon. If you're staying in Durrës itself and not planning to leave, a taxi or private transfer is perfectly reasonable and slightly cheaper upfront. The bus-plus-furgon route is realistic if you're on a tight budget and arriving in daylight, but we wouldn't recommend it for a late-night landing.
